Tips for the barbecue season

As soon as the temperature goes up, people start to crave grilled food. When they do, all sorts of baked goods can go with a successful barbecue. And not only the traditional baguettes and suchlike either – fruit-filled Danish pastries also make a delicious dessert. So there are some wonderful opportunities for you here.

Rustic baguettes are an essential element of the barbecue

Nowadays, sourdough and ciabatta are particularly in demand. Handmade shapes such as twisted baguettes and loaves are very much on trend. But more and more, it’s not just steaks and sausages that end up on the grill – burgers are popular too. Burger buns, therefore, also strike home with barbecue enthusiasts.

In addition, it’s good to have products that you can prepare in advance in the bakery, so that all the customer has to do is finish them off in the oven at home. They can then be enjoyed fresh and still warm. It’s a service that goes down really well!

Customers are looking for barbecue specialities with a certain something

Inspired by social media, many consumers now want unusual barbecue specialities. Not many of them, though, are making these viral ideas from Instagram etc. for themselves. That’s where you can benefit, offering the self-same distinctive fashionable baked goods. They include barbecue accompaniments and breads, such as marinated focaccia or filled plaited loaves. Customers are prepared to spend a little more on such products and can be tempted into making spontaneous purchases.

For flavours, think Mediterranean – ingredients such as olives, garlic and onions work well, as do aromatic herbs including rosemary, thyme and basil.

Fruit-filled Danish pastries make a good balance at the end of a barbecue

Sweet treats are just as much a part of a good meal. Summer bakery products with fresh fruit, light creamy yoghurt or buttermilk work well and are ideal for serving as a dessert at a barbecue. They should either be easy to divide up or served in smaller portions, though.

Display your range of barbecue goods appropriately

It’s important not only to plan your range of baked products for the barbecue carefully but also to present it well. The display should be both eyecatching and attractive so that consumers make the link to barbecuing straight away. Ideally, draw attention to them with their own appropriately themed area of the counter: black wire baskets and stone or slate slabs mixed with wooden boards can create a rustic yet modern look. Alternatively, present your products on a small grill or grate, maybe with a pair of barbecue tongs alongside.

If you have the facility you could offer customers some recipe ideas as well, to give them a better idea of what they could conjure up at home from the baked goods and what barbecue products they would go with. You can find a colourful variety of refinement tips on our Customer Service Portal under the 'Seasonal' filter.
